Why This Site Exists
Illinois treats most jail and inmate information as public, but the hard part is knowing where to look. The Madison County Sheriff's Office runs the local jail and handles people who are pre-trial or serving short county sentences. The Illinois Department of Corrections keeps a separate locator for sentenced state prisoners. Federal and immigration detainees turn up in still other systems. We built this site to map those routes plainly, so a reader can see at a glance which roster, phone line, locator, or records request fits their situation, along with the visitation rules and contact details that go with each one.
